2017 VOICES Faculty Application
DEADLINE TO APPLY: Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11:59 PM PST.
VOICES serves as a journalism training fellowship for college and graduate students, as well as a leadership program for mid-career journalists. Now in its 27th year, AAJA VOICES is a student program that provides aspiring journalists with career-ready skills to succeed in the continually evolving media landscape. The program is a recruiting tool to increase diversity in newsrooms. The most promising students will be selected and given the opportunity to build skills and develop their published work.
The program will select between 10 and 20 students to cover the convention, and a select number of journalists to serve as their mentors. VOICES mentors must be willing to be readily available to encourage, advocate and coach student participants. Mentors are grouped together with select students and work with them ahead of the convention to file stories in advance, as well as help prepare them for the convention (resume, clips, etc.).
The 2017 VOICES program will take place July 24 - 29, 2017 at the Loews Hotel Philadelphia in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. All selected participants must be available for travel (from within the U.S.) during those dates.

In 300 words or less, please state your goal as a VOICES mentor. Do you have management and/or mentoring experience? Do you have experience teaching journalism? Do you have previous VOICES/ELP/JCamp experience (either as faculty or participant)?
As a non-profit program run through the Asian American Journalists Association, VOICES receives support from charitable donations and advertising revenue. Your hotel stay at the 2017 National Convention may be covered, but this is not guaranteed pending fundraising. VOICES can offer either a flight voucher or potentially cover hotel for staff. Will this be a hardship for you? (Answering will not impact a candidate’s selection, but helps us ascertain funding needs.)
Do you anticipate asking for financial assistance to be able to attend the 2017 AAJA National Convention (i.e. local chapter stipends, discounted hotel rate, etc.)?
VOICES will take place July 24-29 in Philadelphia, PA. Your participation as a VOICES mentor requires you to be present in Philadelphia starting on July 24. Will you be able to be present for the duration of the program?
As of the date of your application, do you anticipate taking on any other commitments during the 2017 AAJA National Convention dates (i.e. workshops, guest speaker, etc.)?
If yes, please explain:
VOICES involvement includes close interaction with selected students before the convention to help with their development and understanding of the program. Faculty will begin working with students on pre-assigned stories due before convention. Students will be notified of their acceptance into the VOICES program by the end of April. Will you be available on phone and email to work with these students from May through the time before the convention?
