2018 VOICES Faculty Application
AAJA Voices (voices.aaja.org) is a summer-long journalism training fellowship for undergraduate and graduate students. Now in its 28th year, Voices provides aspiring journalists with career-ready skills to succeed in the continually-evolving media landscape. By nurturing relationships between students and professional volunteers, Voices also gives students the opportunity to tap into mentors’ networks and begin their own long-lasting relationships.
We are looking for professionals who are interested in mentoring our students in their news project over the course of the summer. We are looking for professionals who are interested in growing as managers, training students, editing, and helping students network.
Faculty members this year can expect to:
-Work with students to complete a long-form news project or product that demonstrates their ability to do meaningful and in-depth work beyond what they would normally work on at a school paper or internship throughout the summer.
-Attend the AAJA National Convention in Houston from Sunday, August 5 to Sunday, August 12.
The Voices program represents hundreds of successful alumni that have advanced into newsrooms around the globe and outside the media industry. Former Voices students and mentors have become Pulitzer Prize-winners, documentarians, public relations professionals, broadcast anchors and newsroom editors.
The 2018 Voices program will take place August 5-12, 2018 at the Marriott Marquis Houston in Houston, Texas. All selected participants must be available for travel (from within the U.S.) during those dates.
DEADLINE TO APPLY: Sunday, March 25 at 11:59 PM PST.

In 300 words or less, please state your goal as a Voices mentor. Do you have management and/or mentoring experience? Do you have experience teaching journalism? Do you have previous Voices/ELP/JCamp experience (either as faculty or participant)?
Your Work and Background
Are you a current AAJA member? (To check on your member status, log in to your online account at aaja.org.)
As a non-profit program run through the Asian American Journalists Association, Voices receives support from charitable donations and advertising revenue. Your hotel stay at the 2018 National Convention may be covered, but this is not guaranteed pending fundraising. Voices can offer either a flight voucher or potentially cover hotel for staff. Will this be a hardship for you? (Answering will not impact a candidate’s selection, but helps us ascertain funding needs.)
Do you anticipate asking for financial assistance to be able to attend the 2018 AAJA National Convention (i.e. local chapter stipends, discounted hotel rate, etc.)?
Voice will take place August 5-11 in Houston, TX. Your participation as a Voices mentor requires you to be present in Houston starting on August 6. Will you be able to be present for the duration of the program?
As of the date of your application, do you anticipate taking on any other commitments during the 2018 AAJA National Convention dates (i.e. workshops, guest speaker, etc.)?
If yes, please explain:
Voices involvement includes close interaction with selected students before the convention to help with their development and understanding of the program. Faculty will begin working with students on pre-assigned stories due before convention. Students will be notified of their acceptance into the Voices program by the end of April. Will you be available on phone and email to work with these students from May through the time before the convention?
